// The Other Side of the Equinox //
Spring has come with a strawberry in the mouth. In the very instant the temperatures rose and the skies cleared and the sun washed our skin of an infinity of overcast mornings, something in us awakened. It’s not quite ready to bloom but like a healthy, nourished, sleeping seed, the time has come to roll our shoulders back and emerge from our winter nests, to stretch our legs and walk again in the sun.
Through the winter we’ve been stirring. Literally stirring our dye pots and spinning plates as we go to work, make time to play, indulge in art-making and tend to our home. Winter can be harsh, but short days and long nights at the dye house guide our process. The cold nights kept us locked in the studio, focussed. The indigo vat keeps us warm. In the field behind the studio, our horse friends grow fuzzy. Dynamic sunsets inspire new palettes. The work is in progress.
By the way - if you’ve been enjoying the photos in our newsletters, you might like the new Process section on our website, which shares views from the studio and surrounding countryside. Our work is heavily inspired by the process and we wanted to share it with you.
And so it is spring. The baby eagles of Big Bear Valley have hatched. As I write this, Dan is sewing up new work that has wandered through the dye house at every state of what we call the “wet” process - dipping at the indigo vat, mordanting in hardy steel vessels, drinking up pigment in flower baths. After tinkering with the colors a bit, I return home and the “dry” work can begin.
A new work in progress.
You’ll have to see these in person, because plant-based color is notoriously challenging to capture on camera. Lucky lucky you, you can find our Spring show schedule below. While we’re mostly driving up and down the East Coast this Spring, we will be making an appearance in Chicago at the Old Town Art Fair on June 14-15th. If you have any friends in the area, send them our way. We hope to update this list with a few more shows for the Spring season - watch your inbox to hear from us again, and soon.
